Preparing for a New Year (Part Three)

"Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for thyself in the field; and afterwards build thine house." (Proverbs 24:27)

The thought of a new year prompts each one of us to consider new goals for growth. As we enter into this new year, God has some insight as to how we can properly prepare ourselves to grow forward.  Without a doubt, this is a desire each one of us have. None of us want to become stagnate; we want to grow and do more for God.

We have already considered two of the ways to prepare for a new year. The first is to Prepare with a purpose.  The Bible simply says, "Prepare thy work without." Before we just dive into trying to do things, we must first stop to ask why we are doing what we are doing.  Once we have this firmly established, you can move onto the second step which is to Prepare with a Plan.  The Bible instructs us to "make it fit for thyself in the field." If all you have are goals and you do not develop a pertinent, personal and practical plan to see those goals become a reality in your everyday life, they will never happen. As one person said, "A dream without a plan is a wish."

Now that you have taken time for these first two steps, the final step is what we will look at here.

Prepare for a Performance

With your purpose firmly established, and a plan set to accomplish that purpose, then you are instructed to "afterwards build thine house." (v.27)

It has wisely been said, "Plan your work, and work your plan."  When you determine your purpose and set your plan, it is actually rather fulfilling when it actually comes time to start implementing it.

We oftentimes ascribe all the glory to great performances. For example, when your sports team performs well, you celebrate it.  But, we often miss the fact that the reason for any great performance is the preparation that was invested into it.

Another man once said, "Greatness is not in the performance, but in the preparation."  The fact of the matter is, when you have prepared to do what God has given you to do, when it comes time to do it, there is immense pleasure in the doing of it.

Time invested now in understanding your purpose in life and planning out the fulfillment of that purpose in the coming year will put you into a position of being able to actually enjoy doing what you know God has led you to do with your life.  Living for God is rather enjoyable when you are doing it in conjunction with the One who makes life worth living.

"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." (Matthew 11:28-30)

Biblical Voter Guide 2025

One of the great privileges with which God has blessed us in American society is the freedom to vote . This is a God-given right that God expects us to steward for His glory. In Romans 13:7 the Bible says, “ Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom .” Believers have the unique opportunity in America to vote for candidates and policies that most align with Scripture and can most perpetuate the principles that can bring God’s blessing on a nation. Beyond the biblical mandate, there is a civic mandate for the citizens of this country to vote. Our government was formed to function by citizen participation. Men and women have died to secure to us this freedom. Therefore, it behooves us to exercise our right to vote, however much we may disagree with candidates or issues. As you prepare to vote this November, there are several resources available to guide you. Let me share with you three resources about w...

Tech Timeout // Lessons Learned from a Digital Fast

Recently, God placed it on my heart to step away (fast) from all media for a month. This burden was born within me after I read Charlie Kirk's last book on the sabbath. In it he makes a compelling case for just how much the digital age is devastating our society. The incessant dopamine drip of digital consumption is fracturing our relationships, robbing us of sleep, ravaging our health, hollowing out our souls and districting us from what life is really all about. Honestly, I really didn't think I had a big problem with media consumption. But, in the process of stepping away I discovered that it had a far deeper hold on my life than I had realized. Stepping away was far more challenging than I ever imagined it would be. But, in the process of doing so, God taught me some valuable lessons. Please allow me to share some of them with you here. A media fast enhances your walk with God. While spending daily time with God has been my practice for quite some time, the subtle temptati...

What You Miss When You Miss Church (Part 1)

The gathering together of God's people in a public assembly is one of the closest things to heaven that we can experience on this earth.  There is nothing in this world quite so sweet and precious as a band of believers gathering together to worship Jesus, study God's Word, share burdens, pray for one another, make decisions of faith and declare the gospel.  The longer I live, the more important and significant the gathering of the church becomes to me. Because of this, it truly astounds me how anyone would want to miss this special gathering of the church.  As a pastor, it absolutely confounds me to see people who claim to be struggling continue to find reasons not to come to the exact place where they could get the encouragement and help they need for what they are facing. Certainly, going to church does not make one better than anyone else, yet the public assembly of the church is something that God has commanded His people to "not forsake" for a reason. (Hebrews 1...
